“My only love sprung from my only hate” (I.v.136)

Act I Quote of Note

Love at First Sight

William Shakespeare employs figurative language in the fifth scene of Act 1 in the tragedy Romeo and Juliet. Romeo first sees Juliet at the part thrown by her father, Lord Capulet. After they meet, they instantly fall in love and share a kiss, only to be interrupted by the nurse. Juliet is concerned about whether or not "[her] only love" is married (I.v.136). The nurse then tells her that Romeo is a Montague. Juliet is baffled to find out that Romeo is "sprung from [her] only hate" (I.v.136). Her reaction to the news shows her never ending love for Romeo and how their fate is really destined to end in tragedy. Although Romeo and Juliet come from two feuding families, their love is everlasting and will be together in the end.

Dipti P. "Poem"

Rain

I hate the clouds, I hate the sound

The sorrow they possess

If only I could see the sun

I wouldn't be depressed

Dipti, "Lamb to the Slaughter"

There are several similarities and differences between the short story "A lamb to slaughter" by Roald Dahl and the film by Alfred Hitchcock.

Differences...
  1. In the movie, Mary tells her husband that the baby is a boy.
  2. In the movie, Patrick tells marry that he wants a divorce because he found someone else that he wants to marry, and that Mary can keep the child.
  3. In the movie, the police officer said that Patrick "fooled around a bit."
Similarities...
  1. In both the movie and the book, Mary killed her husband with a leg of lamb.
  2. In both the movie and the book, the police officers said that the killer used some type of big club to kill Patrick.
  3. In both the movie and the book, Mary feeds the police officers with the lamb leg that she used to kill Patrick with.
In my opinion, I liked the video better because it gave me more details about the parts I was confused on, like why Patrick was leaving Mary. I also liked the video better because it gave me a clearer view on the time period that the story took place in.

Dipti, Blog Post #4

In this story, many characters are introduced to the legend of the hounds. Each of them has their own opinions to whether the legend is real or a hoax. Sir Charles Baskerville seemed to have taken this legend very seriously, for he seemed very convinced that his family had been cursed with this terrible fate. Sir Charles was very close to the breaking point before his death and was extremely nervous. Dr. James Mortimer believed that there might have been some supernatural events going on, but he did not quite know if they reconciled with nature. Mortimer heard some stories from people claiming that they had seen a similar creature on the moor and Mortimer did not know what to believe. Mr. Sherlock Holmes seems to believe that something weird is going on with the moor and the Baskervilles, but is quite certain that it has nothing to do with supernatural events. Holmes feels that it may be a person who is attempting to throw all of them off this case. Sir Henry Baskerville has known about the legend of the hounds since he was a child and never really took it seriously. Henry is certain that he wants to go Baskerville Hall despite all these warnings and dangers and nothing can stop him from going to his ancestor’s house. I think that there is no hound hunting the Baskerville men. I believe that it is a person who is trying to mess with them and scare them all off. Someone is attempting to stop the Baskerville line of men until there is none left.

Dipti, Setting

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle chose the moor as the setting because it is described as this very tall, gated, and creepy area. I think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tries to portray this sense of eeriness in the moor as it creates this dark mood. The readers feel the mystery they read about the moor. This in turn, makes the moor a perfect setting for the book. Sir arthur Conan Doyle uses very detailed descriptions to tell the readers about the moor adding to the overall intensity of the book.
